WHAT IS MAMMOGRAPHY? WHAT ARE THE STEPS ?

“In women, besides cervical cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer with high mortality rates in many countries. Most breast cancers are detected when patients notice changes in their breast tissue, such as a lump, dimpling of the skin, or changes in breast color. Therefore, to minimize the risk of breast cancer, you should undergo regular check-ups with mammography screening to monitor breast tissue regularly and detect any underlying health risks for timely treatment.”

1. PURPOSE OF MAMMOGRAPHY

Currently, there are various methods available for breast cancer screening, including ultrasound, biopsy, and mammography. Among these, mammography is one of the most important tools for early detection of breast cancer. It is a specialized X-ray technique specifically designed for breast tissue to aid in the diagnosis of breast pathology.
Mammography is a specialized X-ray imaging method specifically designed for breast tissue. This technique utilizes a small amount of X-ray radiation to produce detailed images of the breast tissue, allowing for the visualization of very small calcifications.

Mammography is performed for the purpose of regular screening and diagnostic evaluation in women, especially those exhibiting unusual symptoms. Numerous studies have shown that breast cancer screening using mammography can reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 30%. Therefore, both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute recommend mammography every 1-2 years for women over 40 years old.

2. WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF MAMMOGRAPHY ?

While X-ray imaging is a familiar concept to many, mammography, though not new, remains relatively unfamiliar. During a mammogram, the patient is positioned in front of the imaging machine with the breast placed on a flat surface. A technologist then applies a flat plastic plate on top of the breast and compresses it. This compression serves several purposes:

  • Minimize blurring during imaging.
  • Spread out the breast tissue for better visualization.
  • Detect abnormalities more easily, especially small lesions.
  • Reduce the amount of X-ray radiation required.

Because no single position can capture the entire breast, there are various mammography positions to obtain comprehensive images of the breast tissue.
